Karl Marx was born on 5th May 1818, 200 years ago. By the time of his death in 1883, he had formulated a world-view which was so ground-breaking that it still holds urgent relevance even today.
Sadly, many twentieth-century dictatorial regimes were misnamed after him, and his name became falsely associated with many of the social evils he actually dedicated his life to battling.
In celebration of his birthday, we will explore what Marx’s ideas about human society really were, and the huge contribution he made to the evolution of modern thought. Above all, we will show how his materialist conception of history, his labour theory of value, and his manifesto for true communism still provide in essence the only practical solution to the vast and worsening suffering, crisis and even threat of extinction which capitalism continues to create for humanity.
