food waste

SOYMB has posted previously upon the problem and reads yet another report on food waste. Supermarket multi-buys have been blamed for creating Britain’s wasteful food mountain. Local Government Association (LGA), which says that supermarket multi-buy deals are fuelling the problem. They complain that buy one, get one free – known as BOGOF – deals on products with a short shelf life, such as fruit and veg, mean shoppers end up throwing a vast amount of food away. 10 million tons of unwanted produce going to landfill sites. Waste and Resources Action Programme said that for every three bags of food bought, one is binned.

LGA environment member Cllr Clyde Loakes says: "That is a heart-breaking figure in a world where hundreds of millions go hungry every day."
